Course Overview

Our three-day instructor-led online CIPP/E training course is designed to build practical knowledge of European data protection law while supporting participants preparing for the IAPP’s globally recognised Certified Information Privacy Professional Europe (CIPP/E) certification. The CIPP/E is widely regarded as the global industry standard for professionals working in privacy, demonstrating an understanding of principles-based privacy frameworks and European data protection laws, including the GDPR and cross-border data flows.

Developed by the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) in collaboration with leading global law firms, the certification is backed by ANSI/ISO accreditation and reflects current regulatory developments. Achieving a CIPP/E credential signals that you are part of a highly skilled group of privacy professionals and is a recognised benchmark used by employers when hiring and promoting in this field.

Delivered online over three full-day sessions, the course provides structured, interactive learning led by experienced practitioners. Participants will gain a strong understanding of European privacy laws and their practical application, while also receiving guidance to support exam preparation and enhance their professional capability.

Course Modules

The course is broken into eleven modules:

Introduces the foundations and evolution of European data protection law, including key institutions and the shift toward a harmonised framework such as the GDPR. It provides historical context and explains how modern privacy laws developed in the EU.

Defines personal data under the GDPR and explains how to identify it using key criteria. It also covers categories such as sensitive, pseudonymous and anonymous data and their regulatory implications.

Explains the roles and responsibilities of controllers, processors and data subjects, including how accountability is allocated. It also covers contractual requirements and vendor management obligations under the GDPR.

Outlines what constitutes processing and the key GDPR principles governing it, including scope and lawful bases for processing. It helps determine when and how personal data can be processed legally.

Covers the rights granted to individuals under the GDPR, such as access, rectification and erasure. It focuses on how organisations must enable and respond to these rights in practice.

Explains transparency requirements, including how and when organisations must provide privacy notices to individuals. It emphasises clear communication about how personal data is collected and used.

Examines mechanisms for transferring personal data outside the EEA, such as standard contractual clauses and binding corporate rules. It highlights the need for appropriate safeguards and transfer risk assessments.

Explores practical compliance challenges across areas like employee data, surveillance, marketing and emerging technologies. It highlights how GDPR interacts with other laws and real-world business practices.

Focuses on implementing appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect personal data. It covers security obligations, risk management and breach-related considerations under the GDPR.

Explains how organisations demonstrate compliance through governance measures such as data protection by design, DPIAs, recordkeeping and appointing a DPO. It emphasises proving, not just achieving, compliance.

Describes the role of supervisory authorities and enforcement mechanisms, including investigations, penalties and remedies. It outlines how GDPR compliance is monitored and enforced across the EU.
