Course Overview

Our two-day instructor-led online CIPT training course is designed to build practical skills in privacy in technology while supporting participants preparing for the IAPP’s globally recognised Certified Information Privacy Technologist (CIPT) certification. The CIPT focuses on how to embed privacy into the design, development and operation of technology systems, making it a key certification for professionals working at the intersection of privacy and technology.

Developed by the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP), the world’s largest global privacy community, the CIPT is based on an ANSI-accredited certification framework. It equips professionals with the knowledge to apply privacy-by-design principles, implement data protection strategies and manage emerging privacy risks such as AI and tracking technologies.

Delivered online over two full-day sessions, the course provides structured, interactive learning led by experienced practitioners. Participants will develop an understanding of how to integrate privacy into technology environments, including system design, engineering, deployment and auditing, while also receiving guidance to support exam preparation.

Who Should Attend

  • Software developers
  • Information security professionals
  • Data architects
  • Privacy engineers
  • Network and cloud engineers

Prerequisites

There are no formal prerequisites for this course. However, some prior experience in technology, privacy or security management is highly beneficial. This course is ideal for those looking to formalise their knowledge through a globally recognised IAPP certification, expand their expertise in privacy in technology, and enhance their professional opportunities within the information economy.

Course Modules

The course is broken into seven modules:

Introduces core privacy concepts, including Fair Information Practice Principles (FIPPs) and the relationship between privacy, security and data governance. It establishes the baseline principles that guide how personal data should be handled in technology systems.

Explains how privacy technologists design, build and evaluate systems to ensure transparency, consent and fairness. It highlights their role in embedding privacy into interfaces, processes and decision-making.

Examines common privacy risks such as disclosure, distortion and misuse of personal data, and how these can harm individuals. It focuses on identifying vulnerabilities and implementing safeguards to mitigate privacy incidents.

Covers technical and organisational controls used to protect personal data, including encryption, anonymisation and access controls. It also explores how organisations enforce policies, demonstrate compliance and provide user control.

Explains how to embed privacy into systems throughout the development lifecycle, from requirements to testing and deployment. It emphasises data minimisation, secure coding practices and integrating privacy into both front-end and back-end design.

Focuses on applying engineering principles to implement privacy controls, including data governance, technical safeguards and lifecycle integration. It also introduces concepts such as design patterns, dark patterns and NIST privacy engineering objectives.

Explores emerging technologies such as AI, IoT and ubiquitous computing, and the unique privacy risks they create. It highlights challenges like automated decision-making, surveillance and data overcollection, and how to manage these risks.
