Some of the subjects we can cover include:

Introduction to Australian Privacy Law

This session focuses on the OAIC’s Privacy Management Framework and what it means for entities subject to the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), (as updated in March 2014). In March 2015 the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) released guidance on a Privacy Management Framework which provides steps the OAIC expects regulated entities to take to meet their obligations under Australian Privacy Principle (APP) 1. The Privacy Management Framework guide is aimed at enabling compliance and encouraging good practice.

Privacy Impact Assessment Workshop

  • This 1/2 day hands-on workshop helps participants understand how to prepare for and carry out a privacy impact assessment (PIA) in their own organisations. A privacy impact assessment represents an innovative approach to managing the risks associated with privacy practices at an early stage of developing new products or services or making significant changes to business operations.  This course covers both the theory behind PIAs as well as offering participants practical experience in completing a PIA through the hands-on exercise.

EU GDPR Compliance Obligations for Australian Businesses

  • The EU data protection framework, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), came into effect in May 2018.  This course provides an overview of what has changed through the introduction of the GDPR and how those changes might affect Australian organisations.
  • This seminar / workshop will outline the main provisions of the GDPR, including the purpose of the new law, who it applies to and some of the most important provisions. It is designed to introduce the GDPR to those not familiar with privacy laws or the operation of those laws in the EU and can  be tailor made to your organisation.

Direct Marketing and legal issues in Australia

  • Email marketing is remarkably effective. But it’s not a matter of simply purchasing a mailing list or compiling all your contacts and watching your ROI roll in. Direct marketers do need to be aware of the email marketing laws in Australia.  The Spam Act 2003 (Cth)and the Spam Regulations aim to reduce unsolicited electronic marketing material (also known as SPAM) being sent by email, SMS, MMS or via instant messaging. This course is designed to give your marketing team the knowledge they need specific to your organisation to ensure they are complying with their legal obligations.

Data Breach Notification in Australia

  • This session is designed as an overview of the Australian data breach notification obligations, introduced by the Privacy Amendment (Notifiable Data Breaches) Bill, and which became effective in February 2018.  These data breach laws will be reviewed in detail as will other obligations to notify of unauthorised access to or disclosure of information, applicable to Australian organisations. This information can be customised to your organisation’s environment and considering specific risks or areas of concern.
